Daily Affirmation #5

“Incline my heart unto Your testimonies, and not for unjust gain” (Psalm 119:36). There is something about the selfish nature of humanity that can’t seem to let gain go. We want to amass treasure. We want all the things. It is such a core desire that we can even find ourselves trying to use the things of the Lord for personal gain. It is the height of ego AND folly. It may seem to work for a time, but the fall will be HARD. We want treasure and things because we were meant for more than this. We’re not peasants. We are ROYALTY. Royalty comes with riches, so we are drawn to them. We want what we lost when we Fell. But there is both a right and a wrong way to get riches. Riches of the flesh have thorns. They come with sorrow – obvious or hidden (Proverbs 10:22). They have a way of running OUR lives and owning US. They are a poison that infects our souls until we are husks grasping at coins too heavy to lift. On the other side are the riches of the Kingdom. They’re spiritual first, and physical second. Most are amassed in Heaven or sitting as values in our spirits. But there are physical ones too. Possessions that are mere assets for blessing. Possessions that DON’T possess us. That have NO thorns. And that we can freely give away whenever we’re asked. When we have those kinds of riches, we can spend our focus on the Lord and His Word. On the most valuable treasures which transform our lives into glistening jewels. We can put our attention on His values and get something out of them infinitely greater than an opportunity to cause ourselves harm (unjust gain). We should ALWAYS check our hearts for the real motivations driving us. Paying attention to the Holy Spirit about it can save us so much grief. We need to use the things of the Lord for what they were meant for and NEVER for selfish gain. We have a covenant of being blessed to be a blessing. That’s what we should be holding fast. True riches used in true ways.
