Daily Affirmation #12

When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he arose from his throne, removed his robe, covered himself in sackcloth, and sat in ashes” (Jonah 3:6). Jonah wasn’t even a third of the way through the city of Nineveh before word reached the king that God was gonna kill them for their sin. The king immediately took responsibility and set the example for what to do. Responsibility is supposed to flow from the top down. The leader or head of the organisation – be it a family, a business, a charity, a church, or a country – is to set the example of responsibility. God didn’t set up the flowchart He did so that we could dictate to one another. He did it so responsibility and example could flow. The king knew what to do, did it first, and THEN asked everyone else to follow suit with their whole heart. This is what leadership is supposed to be. Not demanding. Not domineering. Not trying to bend someone’s will to your own. Leadership by example. Doing the things that are right FIRST. People will see it and begin to emulate it – sometimes even unconsciously. Never underestimate a good example. It will reverberate within those who observe it for years (Hebrews 13:7). Jesus is an example to us. We’re to be an example to others (1 Corinthians 11:1). Take ownership of your example, dust it off, and let it shine out to all around you.
