For the one who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God, because no one understands, but by the Spirit he speaks mysteries.
1 Corinthians 14:2
If we don’t understand what we’re saying, why bother doing it? Because when you do speak in tongues you get edified (1 Corinthians 14:4). To edify is to instruct or improve (someone) morally or intellectually. That’s a pretty big deal. After all, we have – through our spirits – access to the mind of Messiah Jesus (1 Corinthians 2:16). That means that if we’re connected to our spirit and withdrawing current (so to speak) from it, the channels are open and we could be thinking the same kind of thoughts Jesus does and did. Of course, we probably won’t understand anything on our own. But if Ruach HaKodesh was using the words of the Spirit (His native language) to improve our mental faculties, we WOULD. Imagine a word of knowledge from the mind of Messiah Himself that addresses the issue/situation you’re facing or involved in. Tongues is a POWERFUL tool.
It doesn’t sound like a language. The Apostles spoke in languages. Tongues is the speech/language of Ruach HaKodesh. It isn’t a language from this Earth – that we know of. I suppose it could be the original language used before Babel (Genesis 11:1-9). It doesn’t really matter. It is language beyond our current capacity to understand. It may SOUND nuts, but it isn’t meant for our PHYSICAL ears. It’s meant – on the whole – for our SPIRITUAL ears. It can be interpreted. It can sound to one person like Italian and another like Spanish and another like Chalcatongo Mixtec. It depends on the witness Ruach HaKodesh knows is needed. Any way you slice it, it’s speaking through Ruach HaKodesh from your spirit to the mind of Messiah Jesus and back. “So then, my brothers, desire to prophesy, and do not prevent speaking with tongues” (1 Corinthians 14:39). I don’t know why people are so eager to limit their experience with Adonai. Why would you want to prevent yourself from being supernaturally healed? Why would you want to be unable to heal a demoniac? To see Adonai supernaturally touch someone you were ministering to? I know some say it has passed away, but I have found no scriptural precedent for it. Jesus clearly gives authority and power to be used according to the Word – in trust, believing for the will of the Father to come to pass, not trying to get your own agenda floated (James 4:3).
Like with everything in the Kingdom, it is NOT about US. It is about the Father’s Will being done. “May your kingdom come, may your will be done on earth as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:9-13). We are meant to get into harmony with HIM, not try to get Him to do things our way – which, considering the differences in mental capacity, is a mercy. It is about HIS will, HIS plan, HIS design, and HIS schedule. He does not work in this world without a human (He gave us dominion – Genesis 1:26 – and never revoked it), BUT He is looking for our cooperation with His plan. He isn’t that interested in ours. He sees the beginning from the end (Isaiah 46:9-10). In fact, He IS the beginning and He IS the end (Revelation 22:13). So what then is tongues?
Tongues are our dedicated line to Heaven. Direct spirit-spec wire for the ultimate upload/download data transfer. Tongues are our tool for self-maintenance. They keep our ears clean so that we can hear (Matthew 11:15). They make sure our eyes are being drawn up to where they should be – because tongues don’t ‘happen’, they are an act of intent. They are us submitting to Ruach HaKodesh and letting our spirit talk directly to Him and He to us about what’s in the mind of Messiah Jesus. It’s a cooperative endeavour. Hand in hand. Like everything should be (Matthew 19:26).
Daily Affirmation of the Goodness of Elohim: Exodus 8:17
“And he did so, and Aaron stretched out his hand with his staff, and he struck the dust of the land, and it became gnats on the humans and on the animals; all of the dust of the land became gnats in all the land of Egypt.” Not what you think of when you think of the Goodness of Elohim, right? But our God is a MERCIFUL God – even in His judgments (2 Samuel 24:14). You have to remember that previous to this (Exodus 8:1-15) was the plague of frogs. Frogs were sacred to the Egyptians. They couldn’t DO anything to rid themselves of them. When Elohim ended it, the frogs all died in a moment. But now they had who knows how many dead frogs around. They gathered them into heaps and they STANK. Next was gnats and they tormented human and beast alike. But when it was done, it doesn’t say where they went. Well, did you know that gnats are a decomposer? It’s one of the roles Elohim has given them in this fallen world. After the plague, they would have a mission. To help get rid of the frogs the Egyptians couldn’t or wouldn’t. It would help prevent disease, reduce the smell, and generally improve everyone’s lives. THAT is how good OUR God is. He is GOOD and MERCIFUL even in judgment.
Your Daily Confession of Elohim’s Goodness:
I taste and see that Yahweh is good; I am blessed because I take refuge in Him.
