“Therefore let no one judge you regarding food, or drink, or in respect of a holy day or new moon or sabbath days. These are shadows of things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ” (Colossians 2:16-17, MEV). If you read through the Law, it doesn’t take long before you realise that the Sabbath is VERY important. A day to rely on the Lord. A day to rest in the work He did. A day to remember Him and get closer. For the believer in Jesus, a partaker of the New Covenant, you are free from the regimented keeping of a single day a week. We have Jesus Himself as a sabbath rest. Every day we need to be relying on Him for everything. The Sabbath was a picture of a relationship with God that Jesus has now opened to all who believe. The Sabbath was only a picture and is now fulfilled in Christ. Now that Christ has come, the rituals are meaningless and can be oppressive if they are wrongfully thought to be requirements for acceptance by God. As we rest in Jesus, we’re able to utilise the Fruit of His Spirit to live a life devoted to God – resplendent with the fruit of good thought, word, and action that comes from being connected to Jesus, our Vine (John 15:5).
