“You will destroy those who speak lies; the Lord abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man” (Psalm 5:6). I’m not a bloodthirsty person. I’m not violent anymore – it was touchy when I was younger. But like most people of my generation, I came of age alongside the action film. Things have been ramping up since then. Today there are a PLETHORA of movies, television shows, books, comics, video games, and short subject video content that feature violence. Some are body horror, some are gore porn, some are classy and brilliantly shot. Some have implied violence. Some feature less bloody, but just as scarring. Thing is though, God abhors bloodthirsty people. I might not be one, but should I be applying my thoughts to it. Should I be “entertained” by it? Not an issue of fact vs fantasy. It’s a question of brainpower being expended. Of mentally, in my imagination, connecting to a given character or (in EXTREME fantasy) imagining myself as the one who has those amazing skills. Should I be spending mental space on violence? Should I be spending mental time on characters who are bloodthirsty – even if the point is the good guys bringing them down. I have no answers here beyond the Word. It’s a question I’m asking myself and would like you to ask yourselves. Regardless of whether it’s fun, well made, artistically crafted, funny, or gives you chills you enjoy; the question remains. Should this content that portrays people and situations that God abhors be part of what I put before my eyes? This isn’t a witch hunt or a toss it all it’s of the world kind of thing. Real question. We are called to be a separated people. Is this content that should be separated? Will it do me and you real GOOD not to have it in our lives? Food for thought and fuel for prayer. Ask Holy Spirit. I know I will be. He is a guide that NEVER steers wrong. This may not seem like an affirming affirmation, but I know my God loves me. I know He wants good things for me. And I know that verse would never have caught my spirit if there wasn’t something of value that will lead to a closer relationship with Him at the end of it. He loves me too much to leave me the way He found me. Walking hand in hand with Jesus means movement. Never be afraid of it. It’s always good.
