Daily Affirmation #55

You will speak to the children of Israel, saying, “If a man dies, and has no son, then you will cause his inheritance to pass on to his daughter” (Numbers 27:8, MEV). In the ancient world, women were possessions. They were nobodies. Not in GOD’S country. Not in GOD’S family. Among the people of Israel, women had inheritance rights. They could hold property in the Promised Land. Pass it on. Keep it in the family and keep it in the family name of their tribal fathers. This is HUGE. People love to try and poke holes in the bible. To look from today’s societal lens and criticise what God says about people and relationships. Yet look right here. Equal rights. Four thousand years ago. And you see it throughout Jewish culture and history. Yes, there were men who tried to make them second class citizens, but that was by picking up ideas from OUTSIDE Israel. From the pagan nations around them. NOT from God, NOT from the Word. In God’s eyes, men and women are equal and have been from the beginning (Genesis 2:18). A structure of authority does not mean superiority, and ALL authority stops at Jesus’ desk anyway, so it can never in a true heart be used for the domination of another’s will. Male and female is how He made us. Equal partners working together for His glory. It’s a beautiful dichotomy that becomes a trinity when we put Jesus at the center of our lives – a type and shadow of God Himself.
