“Then when many disasters and troubles have fallen on them, this song will testify against them as a witness, for it must not be forgotten from the mouths of their descendants. For I know their intention which they are developing even now, before I have brought them into the land which I promised” (Deuteronomy 31:21, MEV). God knew that even as He was speaking to them, even as they were getting a recap of the Law with expanded application, even as they were joining into a renewed covenant with God Almighty, even then their intention which they are developing even now was to disobey by going their own way, doing their own thing, and worshipping who and what they themselves wanted. What a pitiful and extremely accurate view of the human heart. “The heart is more deceitful than all things and desperately wicked; who can understand it?” (Jeremiah 17:9, MEV). Apparently only God can. Yet He still wants to deal with us. What love! What amazing love! How often we face Him while planning sin. We read the Word or we go to church and listen to a sermon, but our minds are focused on gluttony, that person we’re hooking up with later, or the money we’re going to take out of the safe at work Monday morning. We say one thing, but we heart another. The truly pitiful thing is that God is the ONLY one we can NEVER fool. He is the ONLY one who sees into our hearts (Proverbs 21:2). We need to break ourselves of the ‘He doesn’t know’ mindset. It is easier to deal with obedience or disobedience than someone who is two-faced (Revelation 3:15-16). Be honest with yourself. Don’t plot unclean, broken behaviour when you’re facing God. You may want to be stubborn. You may want to reject what you hear. But do NOT lie. Not to yourself and not to Him. Be honest in your heart. And give Him a chance. Give the Word a chance. God is the only real freedom that exists. It is worth an HONEST look.
