“Desist, and learn that I am God, supreme over the nations, supreme over the earth” (Psalm 46:11, CJB). It’s easy to kill ants. Most kids have done it in some way at some time. One of the big reasons that’s true is that ants are almost always busy. They are so intent on what they’re doing, they’re easy to sneak up on. They fail to notice the giant who is creeping up with a rock, a stick, a shoe, or a magnifying glass. In the same way, it’s easy to startle little kids. They are so intent on what they’re doing. On their world. Their little hands and feet doing their little things, eyes staring, face screwed in concentration. You can walk right up behind them and they don’t know you’re there. I’ve gone in, watched my kids, left, and they never noticed I was there. Once, while my young son was watching his TV show, I put his snack bar (wrapped) on his head and it stayed there until the show was over. He never even noticed. He was busy. We’re the same way. We get so busy with our day-to-day that we don’t notice God. We don’t notice His presence – even though He promised to never leave us. We don’t hear Him speaking to us ,helping us solve the situation. Giving us words to say and verses to stand on. Reminding us of who we are in Him and what we have access to as His beloved children. We need to desist. To stop. Not to simply pause. But to completely cease DOING and start experiencing the stillness of that stoppage. Yes, it is quiet. Yes, it can be disconcerting. It can even feel a little lonely. But when we lean into that stoppage, we start to hear. The sounds around us that had been drowned out. We notice smells we’d glossed over. And if we keep still and pay attention, we start to realise His presence. We start to hear His voice. We start to notice His scent. We see His light from inside us. And we begin to experience the reality of relationship we have with our creator. We start to BE with God. It’s worth it to desist on a regular basis. To stop trying to FIX everything and to LISTEN to what’s being said. Desist and KNOW Him today.
