Sing to him; sing praises concerning him; tell of all his wonderful works.
Psalm 105:2
We all have the ability to make sound of some kind. Most of us have the ability to vocalise. Not all of us are good at it. However, nowhere in scripture does it say that we are to sing WELL, just sing. Sing the praises of Adonai. Calling on His Name and giving Him thanks. “And do not be drunk with wine (in which is dissipation), but be filled by the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and singing praise in your heart to the Lord” (Ephesians 5:18-19). It is through Ruach HaKodesh that we manage to do this. To sing our heartfelt praises to Adonai. To speak to one another about Him and encouraging each other in Adonai. Singing does something unique in the human psyche – both males and females.
Adonai is not asking us to do anything that HE doesn’t do as well. “Yahweh your God is in your midst; a mighty warrior who saves. He shall rejoice over you with joy; he renews you in his love; he will exult over you with singing” (Zephaniah 3:17). This is further proof that we are made in the image of Adonai (Genesis 1:26). Animals make song. Planets make song. Angels make song. Only Adonai and humanity can use song to rejoice in joy, renew in love, or exult in each other. We (Adonai and humanity) use song in a way that nothing else in or outside of creation does. It is not accomplished with talent or skill. It is accomplished with the heart and it is performed in SPIRIT – which is also unique to humanity and Adonai. Anything can have a soul, but only we share the Breath of Lives with Adonai (Genesis 2:7). One of the evidences and responsibilities of that is song.
How do we manage it when we don’t FEEL like it? When we’re experiencing a bad day? When we’re in a bad mood? When life is trying to squeeze us? When our circumstances are less than ideal? We use Ruach HaKodesh. He is there to guide us. He can guide us in song. He can provide words (Luke 12:12). He can inspire the tune or show us what to do on a given instrument (John 14:26). We can enter into the frame of mind that Ruach HaKodesh inhabits all the time. It is available to us around the clock. And because of how humanity is wired, we don’t need to FEEL something to experience it. In fact, if we DO something then we will come to FEEL it. Experience creates feeling, feeling does not create experience. Smile more and you’ll feel happier. Science. Does a whale biologist learn to love the whales they study, or do they study whales because they love them? Do the one and the other will follow.
In every area of our lives, spiritual, physical, emotional, relational, mental, financial, etc etc, Ruach HaKodesh is ALWAYS the wise old one who knows what we need to do and how we need to do it. There is NOTHING that He cannot instruct us in. There is NOTHING that He cannot show us. Everything relating to our existence is covered in His syllabus. Singing is no different. They be little silly ditties that you sing while you do the dishes, fix the car, mow the lawn, bathe the baby, or fix dinner. Yet if they are inspired and fuelled by what Ruach HaKodesh shows us, don’t be surprised if they are being echoed by the Hosts before the Throne. Worship is worship and ALL heartfelt worship is worthy to be sung before the King of the Universe(s).
Don’t get hung up on how good or bad you are at it. Don’t get hung up on whether it is a sophisticated tune or something you picked up in children’s church. Focus on what you believe in your heart. Are they honest words? Sing them. Warble them. Croak them. Worst case start by humming them. Repeat the psalms to your own tunes. Do whatever comes to your mind. Talk to Ruach HaKodesh about it. Listen to what He says. Ask Jesus what He wants to hear. Ask the Father what HE wants to hear. I’m sure they have favourites. Listen. Respond. Sing. Just SING. It is worship in a unique way nothing else can manage. Minister to the Lord. Sing to Him. Sing for Him. He sings to you, after all. It’s part of being in His family. He has a VERY musical family. Heart intent is the key, not skill. Believe in your heart what you sing from your mouth. Sing your scriptural declarations. Call on His Name. Give thanks to the Lord. Adonai inhabits the praises of His people (Psalm 22:3). Give Him something to inhabit. Praise the Lord. Sing!
Daily Affirmation of the Goodness of Elohim: Matthew 7:7-8
“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and it will be opened for you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened” What is on the other side of that door? The FULL package of salvation and all the blessings that it entails: Jesus. “Behold, I stand at the door and knock! If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, indeed I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with me. The one who conquers, I will grant to him to sit down with me on my throne, as I also have conquered and have sat down with my Father on his throne” (Revelation 3:20-21). If we seek Him, He’ll be found. I mean, we only need to open the door, right? He’s RIGHT THERE. Isn’t that great? No massive hunt. No lengthy slog through the jungle. Take off the locks, open the door, done. Knowing that, every time we go to seek Adonai we should start off praising Him. Why? We’re about to receive what we’re looking for. Don’t put a time limit on it. Don’t mix your trust with a clock. Just know this: you open, He’s there, He comes in and you get what He has (James 4:1-8). Done. Simple. Wonderful. And so, SO easy. What a GOOD God!
