“Deal with Your servant according to Your mercy, and teach me Your statutes. I am Your servant; grant me understanding, that I may know Your testimonies” (Psalm 119:124-125, MEV). David, the psalmist, did not ask for an explanation. He didn’t ask for reasons. He didn’t whine about needing to know. David asked for understanding about the statutes and testimony of the Lord. He wanted to know the Word and to understand the Word. He wasn’t asking about his situation. He wasn’t asking about his struggles. He wasn’t asking for help with his feelings. He knew that everything – life itself – hung on understanding the Lord’s point of view. One of the reasons I do what I do is because it’s fun to learn about the Lord. Although not so much ‘fun’ to learn you’ve been doing something wrong or need to adjust your thinking (the correction part). It’s still worth it to make the effort and let the Word renew your thinking (Romans 12:2), because at the end of the process, when you’re aligned with God’s frequency, everything is so much better. You have a better relationship with Him. You have new knowledge, new insight about Him. You have a new way to praise Him. It makes life so much more vivid. I thank God I am in His covenant (Luke 22:20) with better promises (Hebrews 8:6). We have Holy Spirit WITH us all the time and He can give us revelation about the Word (John 16:13). Holy Spirit WROTE the Word down through humanity. Holy Spirit can give us THE best commentary on it. We get it by default. Well, we still need to ask and listen, but we aren’t dependent on it arriving like David was. We already have it. It’s already with us. Wisdom is ours for the asking (James 1:5). We can be taught verse by verse by the One who wrote it. How awesome is that? Understanding is NOT being kept from us. We don’t have to rely on human prejudice or human thinking when interpreting the Word – there IS still a place for anointed teaching (which is Holy Spirit telling someone about the Word and them telling us what He said). We can study the Word in our own homes, our own vehicles, or anywhere we go. We can get it straight from Holy Spirit. Anointed teaching from THE teacher. What a great gift! He loves us too much to keep understanding Himself from us. He’s awesome!
