Dip the Toe: Jeremiah 47-48 “Nations”

(All scripture from Lexham English Bible, Copyright 2012 Logos Bible Software)

The Lord continued prophesying about the nations surrounding them.

The Philistines would be attacked at Gaza by the Egyptians. This was told BEFORE it happened. The Egyptians would come on them so hard and so violently that grown men would flee, abandoning their children in favour of self-preservation. They would be cut off from help from Tyre and Sidon. The Philistines would be totally destroyed. Jeremiah cried out asking for the Lord to rest from judging. Sadly, the people’s own choices had led to this (the Philistines were originally led to the area by the Lord, but they despised Him and totally rejected Him). They had rejected His mercy too many times. There was no hope of a stay. Their behaviour was too wicked NOT to judge.

And Moab will be destroyed from being a people, because against Yahweh he magnified himself.” (Jeremiah 48:42)

The Moabites were next. They were descended from Lot (Genesis 16:36-38). Lot’s daughter had gotten him drunk to a stupor and raped him, getting pregnant and having a son she named Moab. The Lord spoke judgment against Moab through Isaiah as well (Isaiah 15:1-9; 16:1-14). They would be cut off as a nation. They would cry and wail in their destruction. They would become ashamed of their idols and idolatrous practices just as Israel had become ashamed of Bethel (1 Kings 13), where Jeroboam had placed the golden calves (1 Kings 12:28-29). Moab had rejoiced at the destruction of Israel, but they too would be destroyed. It was coming quickly and the Lord warned the Moabites to flee their nation, but their pride was a stumbling block for them.

The Lord said idolatry in Moab would completely cease after this. Moab as a nation would come to an end. They were FULL of pride and set themselves against the Lord. If they – on the day of the judgment – tried to flee, they would fall into the pit the Lord had set for them. If they got out of the pit, they would encounter a snare. The year of their punishment had come. Their sons and daughters would be taken captive. BUT, in the latter days [days still yet to come], He would return a remnant.
