“How will I curse whom God has not cursed? Or how will I defy whom the Lord has not defied?” (Numbers 23:8, MEV). God loves us and when we stay in His camp, He defends us. Here Balaam was looking down on the people from a mountain. He had been brought to curse them. Were they perfect? No. God was dealing with them in the camp. He was teaching, guiding, and correcting them. But He wasn’t cursing them. He was BLESSING them. He was also DEFENDING them. Outsiders were bound up. They were blocked. They were tackled. They were unable to use their weapons on His people (Isaiah 54:17-18). From the inside, the people may not have realised it. They certainly didn’t know that there were people trying to curse them. I think it will be an eye-opening experience when we get to the Throne face to face and learn of all the times and ways we were saved – without ever knowing we were in danger. The Lord puts guards around us (Psalm 91) because we are His children. Because we make Him our fortress. Our Source. Because we keep our eyes on Him and stay under His wings. Because we humbly submit to His position as Lord, God, and King. Because He loves us and we love Him and we seek to bring Him joy with our love – including behaviour that reflects that love. He watches over us. He watches out for us. He corrects us, but that has nothing to do with the outside. It’s none of their business. God protects us because He is merciful and full of Grace. God is love and God protects us. Often when we don’t realise it.
