Daily Affirmation #205

In Him was life, and the life was the light of mankind” (John 1:4, MEV). One of the best things about light is that it does not need darkness to define it. There is a false thinking that without darkness, we wouldn’t know light WAS light. Without evil, you wouldn’t know that good WAS good. Without sickness, we wouldn’t know health WAS health. This is NOT TRUE. The truth is that if all we knew was GOODNESS, the ONLY thing we would be ignorant of was how bad badness could be. Light does NOT need darkness to define it. You can understand what light IS and what light DOES without KNOWING darkness. It would be an accepted possibility that would never need to manifest or be observed in order to understand it. That’s how SIMPLE darkness is. By looking at light and everything that light enables you to observe, we can see its importance. We can also conjecture a condition in which light was not. Light can teach us what darkness is: absence of light. Flip that around, however, and darkness CANNOT teach about light. Without external knowledge, you could not understand light or what it did. There is NO knowledge in darkness. There is NOTHING to be gained except loss and pain in learning about darkness. Darkness exists to unbalance the knowledge of light. It NEVER brings balance. Humanity did not perceive the Light of the World. They could not SEE or UNDERSTAND Jesus. But that didn’t stop Jesus. In spite of the entire population of the planet being against Him, He died for us (Romans 5:10). He paid for Sin. He paid for our sins. He enabled us to travel from darkness to light. What grace. What mercy. What love. He didn’t (and doesn’t) need us. But oh BOY, do WE need HIM!
