Psalm 21 is a praise report about the strength that is the psalmists because of JOY in the salvation of the Lord. The blessing, the life, the abundance, the protection, the whole package all possible only because of God’s salvation. Look to Him for it. Praise Him when He grants it.
Psalm 22 was quoted by Jesus on the cross (Matthew 27:46; Mark 15:34). In the ancient world, quoting the beginning of a work was the same as quoting the whole thing. What is the whole thing? The condition/suffering, the mission, and the ultimate victory of Messiah over the enemies of God. It is a prophetic look to the cross. It is a statement that no matter what it LOOKS like, the work of the cross is FINISHING the war against sin and making the Way to restoration for all humanity. It is a VICTORIOUS Psalm and a VICTORIOUS and JOYFUL statement by Jesus during His worst ordeal. It is quoted sixteen times in the New Covenant.
Psalm 23 is a testament to the GOODNESS of God and a prophetic look to the ministry of Jesus. Making the people lie down (John 6:10). Restoring them (John 10:10). Walking WITH them (Matthew 19:26; Hebrews 13:5). Preparing for them (John 14:3). Following them with mercy (John 5:24). It is a declaration to seek God and stay with Him forever.
Psalm 24 is praise for the glory of God as revealed in creation. It is instruction for the people to look up to God and seek Him because it is right and godly to do so.
Psalm 25 is a request for wisdom and guidance in getting the Word into the psalmist’s heart. To be shown the Way of God and to be taught His path. It is a cry for Holy Spirit. It is also a plea for forgiveness and an acknowledgement of the struggle within humanity’s hearts as they seek to be better servants of God. It is a request for deliverance and a praise to the God who delivers.
Psalm 26 is a request for the Lord to search the heart of the psalmist and show all that he is right with God. That nothing that is happening is because of anything HE did (John 9:2-3). That his only claim of redemption is because of God. That he seeks the redemption of God and totally pushes aside wicked thinking and the company of wicked men.
Psalm 27 is a joyful celebration of trust in God. How it is justified. How faithful God is. How great is the joy that comes with company with the Lord. No matter the circumstances, no matter who came against him, and no matter what everyone said. God could be trusted in, is trusted in, and WILL BE trusted in because God is trustworthy.
Psalm 28 is praising God for answered prayer. That they weren’t words spoken to an empty room, but words from the psalmist’s heart to the heart of God Himself. That the Lord answers prayer.
“The voice of Yahweh is powerful. The voice of Yahweh is majestic. The voice of Yahweh breaks the cedars. Yahweh shatters even the cedars of Lebanon.” (Psalm 29:4-5)
Psalm 29 is a humble submission to the position that God occupies. An acknowledgement of His strength and glory, His majesty and honour. That He is God and WORTHY of praise.
