Dip the Toe: Psalm 69-73 “Bless God”

(All scripture from Lexham English Bible, Copyright 2012 Logos Bible Software)

Psalm 69 is both a prayer for help in times of trouble and a prophetic looking forward to the help Jesus brought when He died for us and enabled our salvation. The suffering detailed in it speaks of the FEELINGS of David in crisis and ALSO the suffering of Jesus through the experience of the cross. It also blesses the Lord in praise for the salvation He was sure to bring – to David and also to us all.

Psalm 70 is an echo of Psalm 40 and a further stride into rejoicing in the Lord in times of trouble. It encourages us to magnify and bless God no matter WHAT is going on. Though we are poor in our own resources, God is our help and deliverer, giving us all we need or could ever want in Himself.

Psalm 71 is a song of praise to the God who is our solid foundation. It blesses the Lord because of how trustworthy and how faithful He is. He IS our salvation in ALL things. He can TRULY be depended on.

Psalm 72 is a prayer of David probably at the coronation of his son Solomon. It is the last psalm that David wrote. A king celebrating the coronation of another king and looking up to God and declaring how MAJESTIC God is. No matter how much is accomplished here, God is SO MUCH MORE and WORTHY of praise.

Psalm 73 is a celebration of the GOODNESS of God. The wicked seem to prosper. The world seems to be full of success and pleasures. But it is ALL false. Paper tigers. They scoff and set their minds and mouths against God, laughing at how they are ‘getting away with it’. But God is not mocked. God is not fooled. And He will bring to pass ALL judgment. He will celebrate the righteous. He will defend His children. And all who are far from Him will perish.
