Dip the Toe: Psalm 74-82 “Know Him”

(All scripture from Lexham English Bible, Copyright 2012 Logos Bible Software)

Psalm 74 is a questioning lament about how long the judgment on Israel would last. Israel had forsaken God and refused to repent, so they were judged. The Temple was destroyed. And this psalm is lamenting the situation while acknowledging their guilt and the justness of God.

Psalm 75 is a song about the justness of the judgments of God. The Old Covenant was a covenant of judgment. Of Law. It pointed to the need for a Saviour. This song is about the rightness of what God performed in judgment.

Psalm 76 is about God. About His character. Yes, He judged Sin. Yes, humanity did not enjoy it (nor do we in the New Covenant enjoy correction in itself). But the MAJESTY of God is on display in each and every judgment. It is a song about His MAJESTY and magnificence.

Psalm 77 is about remembering the comfort God gave and gives us. When we are in trouble, or when we are remembering the troubles that came at us, we need also to remember God’s comfort. God’s salvation. God’s mercy. God’s love.

Psalm 78 is a thanksgiving shout to the mercy of God. Israel stepped wrong, as do we all, but God did not give them what they deserved. They were judged, but not in fullness. They were punished, but not in fullness. God was MERCIFUL to them.

Psalm 79 is a lament on the destruction of Jerusalem and the nation. It looks at all the groanings and tribulations that they endured. It looks forward to a coming salvation and restoration by God who loves His children – especially in correction. It calls for a return of the people to that God of love and mercy.

Psalm 80 is a call for the restoration of God’s people, God’s nation, and God’s Temple – all of which was accomplished in and through Jesus. It is a declaration about the faithfulness of the people in worshipping God and their submission to Him and His ways.

Psalm 81 is a song of the need for repentance. True repentance is from the heart, and this song calls for the people to look deep within and choose to align themselves with God’s will and God’s ways in all things.

Psalm 82 is a rebuke on ungodly judges and a call for true justice from God.
