(All scripture from Lexham English Bible, Copyright 2012 Logos Bible Software)

Psalm 86 is a prayer for mercy from God because God is FULL of majesty. It is an acknowledgement of who God is. It is also a yearning for the New Covenant relationship we have with Holy Spirit.

Psalm 87 is an acknowledgement of Jerusalem as a special place because God has chosen to place Himself there. To settle that city on the very mountains as a foundation. That it is holy because HE is Holy.

Psalm 88 is an Old Covenant prayer for God to hear them, for God to be with them, and for them to be cleansed so that they can enjoy God’s presence. In and through Jesus we have ALL these things available to us. This psalm feels the burden of Sin (Sin period, not specific individual sins) and yearns for the purity of the presence of God and being right with Him.

Psalm 89 is thanking God for His mercy and His covenant. For the protection and blessing that is part of that covenant. No matter what happens around them, they are secure in the covenant relationship that God established with them. They are joyful in the might of the Lord. It regrets past blessings that were missed and it looks forward to the eternally established covenant in Messiah that will forever cement relationship between God and humanity.

Psalm 90 is a psalm by Moses. It was a transformative psalm designed to kill of a generation that was taking a long time to pass on. It is a meditation on the greatness of God, the majesty of God, and the justness of God. It is a meditation on how God dealt with the rebellious people who refused to enter the Land. It’s an acknowledgement of who God is and the joy the people could take in an obedient relationship with Him.

Psalm 91 is a covenant relationship psalm. It speaks of what IS AVAILABLE to those who TRUST and BELIEVE in God. That those who call on Him WILL be answered. When in trouble, He IS with them. He delivers and honours those who ACKNOWLEDGE HIM LORD. They are SATISFIED with long life. They are SHOWN His salvation. They are in the boat with Him, not the storm (Matthew 8:23-27).
