“If you do well, shall you not be accepted? But if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. It desires to dominate you, but you must rule over it” (Genesis 4:7, MEV). This is among the first instructions God EVER gave humanity. It was given without the formal codified Law. It was given without the empowerment of Jesus’ sacrifice and covenant. It was given before Abraham’s covenant of Blessing. Yet STILL we were empowered to rule over sin and not have sin rule over us. We CANNOT do it alone, but even WAY BACK THEN God SPOKE and gave His Word: you must rule over it. It was a promise to hold onto. Thank God we have BETTER promises (Hebrews 8:6), Jesus’ armour (Ephesians 6:10-18), and the Spirit’s Fruit (Galatians 5:22-23). We have Jesus’ covenant to abide in and Holy Spirit indwelling us. It is because of all THAT, because of Jesus’ work within us, that we are born together again in Him, new creations. Sin is not inside us anymore. It doesn’t rule our thoughts, behaviours, or our hearts. It is again OUTSIDE and crouching at the door. It’s crouching. The devil prowling. They are BOTH looking for opportunity. But Jesus loved us enough to empower us. The Father loves us enough to direct us. The Spirit loves us enough to live inside us and guide us. God is MORE THAN ENOUGH for us to win this fight in, through, and because of Jesus. What a GREAT God!
