Dip the Toe: Proverbs 5-9 “Ways”

(All scripture from Lexham English Bible, Copyright 2012 Logos Bible Software)

Chapter five is a detailed warning about the unseen dangers and consequences of adultery.

Chapter six warns us about making pledges and agreeing to be a part of deals that are unwise. It warns us about idleness (not rest), showing how easy it is to give up when we are not being productive in some way. There is a further warning against adultery, giving some real consequences to participating in it. Chapter six also gives us a portrait of a wicked person, listing the six character traits they all share.

Chapter seven is a portrait of the adulteress (and could EASILY be adapted to an adulterer – a male encouraging the behaviour) who encourages the behaviour. It shows how easily one can get caught up in the snare and also how blind we are to the snares we are in. It gives warning and guidance of how to avoid it, as well as a little on WHY that is SO important.

Chapter eight is about the virtue of wisdom. How pure and valuable it is. Of how it changes us on the inside and the character it develops in us. It shows us how someone with wisdom lives and acts. It also discusses one of the best reasons/benefits of engaging with wisdom: life and favour with the Lord.

Chapter nine is a comparison of, and the contrast between, the Way of Wisdom and the Way of Foolishness. It talks about the actions and words of people who engage with wisdom and also the same with those who reject it. It shows the benefits of the one and demonstrates the lack of benefits with the other.
