Dip the Toe: Ecclesiastes 9-12 “Whole Duty”

(All scripture from Lexham English Bible, Copyright 2012 Logos Bible Software)

Chapter nine is about how death comes to everyone. Good, evil, rich or poor. Because of that, only wisdom has any value. If everyone dies, then living with wisdom is FAR superior to living in folly. It’s much better to be wise in your time than waste it.

Chapter ten is about the differences between wisdom and folly. It is about the excellence of wisdom and the benefits it brings to your life. Being foolish makes everything worse. Being wise makes everything better.

Chapter eleven is about being diligent in your pursuit of wisdom – which means remembering the Lord. The Lord is the source of all true wisdom. Remembering Him and remembering that, so you will really lean into His teaching is vital to living a life filled with goodness.

Chapter twelve is about remembering who created you. Who it was who set these things before you. Who gave you all you need to prosper. It is also a warning to start early in seeking God to avoid all the hassles, troubles, and sorrow a life outside of God entails.

Chapter twelve ends with an epilogue to the whole book. After trying all work, all pleasure, all thinking, all science, all the natural world, all the collected sayings of the wise in the known world, a conclusion is reached. Revere God. Shun evil. Keep God’s commandments and follow His ways. This is THE duty of humanity. This is our purpose. And it is THIS that we should do. In the end, God judges everyone – including EVERY secret thing. No one should want to be on the ungodly side.
