Dip the Toe: 1 Chronicles 11-14 “Rise of David”

(All scripture from Lexham English Bible, Copyright 2012 Logos Bible Software)

Chapter eleven has the crowning of king David at Hebron and the beginning of his reign. He captures Jerusalem and establishes his ‘mighty men’, those heroes who came to serve David and either matched or exceeded his valour. Some of their exploits are given.

Chapter twelve details more mighty men joining David from other tribes of Israel (not just the ones in Judah where he reigned). It also details the make-up of his army and those who came to him to celebrate the idea that he rule over all the kingdom of a joined Israel, not just of Judah.

Chapter thirteen details David’s DESIRE to have the ark with him in Jerusalem, and the very poor way that he went about it. God doesn’t seem to be consulted. The ways the Lord proscribed for the ark to be transported were not followed. And a man who knew better touched the ark out of a desire to do a good thing and suffered the consequences of not following the Law. The ark did NOT get to Jerusalem, but was left at the house of Obed-Edom (a Gittite) – who was BLESSED because the ark was with him.

Chapter fourteen details how David entrenched himself in Jerusalem and cemented his kingdom by defeating the Philistines (again) two times. Both times David consulted the Lord as to whether he should attack and the Lord told him what to do. This time David did what the Lord laid out and gained great victories against them. His reputation spread, and the Lord made sure the other nations knew about him and began to fear him.
