Dip the Toe: 1 Chronicles 15-17 “Covenant”

(All scripture from Lexham English Bible, Copyright 2012 Logos Bible Software)

Give thanks to Yahweh; call upon his name;
    make known his deeds among the nations!
Sing to him; sing praises to him;
    tell of his wondrous works!
Glory in his holy name;
    let the hearts of those seeking Yahweh rejoice!
Seek Yahweh and his strength;
    seek his face continually!
Remember his wonderful works that he has done,
    his wonders and the judgments of his mouth,
O offspring of Israel, his servant,
    O sons of Jacob, his chosen ones!
He is Yahweh our God;
    his judgments are in all the earth.
” (1 Chronicles 16:8-14)

Chapter fifteen shows us David bringing the ark of the covenant to Jerusalem – the CORRECT way. They followed ALL the commandments of the Lord regarding the ark that were in the Law of Moses. In addition, they also sacrificed and worshipped the Lord every step of the way. David was there, so were the Levites, priests, elders of the people, representatives of the tribes, and thousands of people who came to participate. It was quite a different atmosphere than the first time. This time, it was about reverence and giving God place as the leader and Source of the nation.

Chapter sixteen is a song of thanksgiving. The ark is put into place in Jerusalem inside the tent that was prepared for it. David sings a song before the Lord in the sight and hearing of all the people. Ministers were also appointed for the care of the ark – to perform the daily actions that were proscribed in the Law of Moses.

Chapter seventeen has two parts. David was happy where he was, but felt bad that he had a palace and God had a tent. He desired to build a proper temple for the ark and for worship. God would not allow this, but God LOVED that David wanted to build Him a house. Instead, God establishes covenant with David and builds DAVID a house (from which came Jesus). The second half of the chapter is David’s response to the Lord. A humble prayer and his acceptance of their covenant (the Davidic Covenant).
