“For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome,” (1 John 5:3, MEV). We tend to get this mixed up. We don’t keep His commandments because we love Him. Our love for Him means we keep His commandments. It’s like a marriage. I don’t refrain from beating my covenant partner in order to love them. I love them, so it doesn’t even cross my mind to beat them. When we love something or someone, we can’t HELP but to show it by pleasing them. We find the things that make them smile and we do those things in order to see them smile. This is part of who we are because it is something built into the deepest parts of ourselves. It is how God shows love, so it is how WE show love (Genesis 1:26). God is righteous and pure, so He ALWAYS gets it right. When we seek His face, abide in Jesus, and keep Him as our Source, we also get it right. When we take our eyes off of Jesus, we do not. It’s not complex and it isn’t a burden. Our obedience naturally grows out of that love. It is amazing and eye opening just how much the love of God GIVES to us. How much it EMPOWERS us. How much of our victory in Jesus is founded on it. Everything we do and everything we are allowed to experience and everything we are called to, all comes from and gains substance from God’s love for us. It is a beautiful picture and a marvellous revelation meant for each and every one of us.
