“But when the young man heard this, he went away sorrowful. For he had great possessions” (Matthew 19:22, MEV). So often we take ourselves out of the running. And we do it with our decisions to hang on. To hang on in spite of what we KNOW is truth – because of where it came from. We choose to hang onto things that are here and now, because we are selfish and like pleasure. We choose to hang onto attitudes and aspects of our lives that WE like. But we weren’t created for that. We were created to bring Him glory. It doesn’t mean we won’t have nice things. Jesus had nice things. He owned a house. He had access to money. He had a full ministry. He had nice clothes. He had education. He was respected in His community – right up until He started declaring God’s truth to people who didn’t want to hear it. We can have nice things and enjoy life. But all those things and all that life can glorify God – as long as we aren’t selfish with it. As long as we aren’t holding onto something that it is better to let go of. The young man could have done what Jesus said and sold his possessions. Who knows what NEW possessions might have come his way? And even if none did, imagine the opportunity to sit at Jesus’ feet and hear the Word preached by the Word Himself. When we are asked to let something go, we need to understand it is for OUR benefit, not His. He ALWAYS has our best interests in His mind. He is always about improving who we are and making us more like Him. Which is the BEST way to be.
