“Again, Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me shall not walk in the darkness, but shall have the light of life.”” (John 8:12, MEV). The world is full of technology and systems. Interconnected domains where things run a certain way. But underneath all those systems and all those inventions – beneficial though they can be – is an underlying principle: everything we can see, touch, hear, taste, and smell is MALLEABLE. It is subject to CHANGE. Even the stars can cease to shine. Things can change in small ways and they can be totally overturned. It can be gradual, the stuff of centuries, and it can be overnight. It can be predicted and prepared for, and it can be in a moment of total surprise. Much of human endeavour is a seeking of permanence and stability. Of altering circumstances around ourselves until they are favourable in a sustaining kind of way. All human efforts are flawed and we really can’t make ANYTHING permanently stable. But through it all there shines Jesus. Through all the changes and upheavals, through the mild alterations and the cataclysmic surprises, Jesus is steady and secure. Shining out for all to find Him. Shining out for all to get wisdom from. A light to our path, securing our footing in Himself. He is the LIFE in a fallen creation that is tilted toward death. He is the success in a universe where all things fail. He is what we need when the ground seems to fall away. He is the life raft, the boat in the storm, the lighthouse amidst the rocky shore. If we will take Him to heart, to listen and obey, then it won’t matter WHAT happens. We will have footing where no footing appears to be. We will have security when all else fails. We will be IN the storm, but not at the MERCY of the storm. We will be in Him, He will be in us, and all will be overcomeable through Him who redeems ALL who receive Him.
