Nested in Him: Genesis 15, Psalm 47

(All scripture from the World English Bible, ebible.org, all rights reserved)

Behold, Yahweh’s word came to him, saying, “This man will not be your heir, but he who will come out of your own body will be your heir.” Yahweh brought him outside, and said, “Look now toward the sky, and count the stars, if you are able to count them.” He said to Abram, “So your offspring will be.” He believed in Yahweh, who credited it to him for righteousness. He said to Abram, “I am Yahweh who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give you this land to inherit it.”

(Genesis 15:4-7)

The princes of the peoples are gathered together,
the people of the God of Abraham.
For the shields of the earth belong to God.
    He is greatly exalted!

(Psalm 47:9)

Abraham was childless. There was no evidence that he would ever have a natural heir. But God was telling him that he would. God pointed to what He had already done with and for Abraham. Using past faithfulness as a benchmark, God simply stated that His future promises were just as faithful. This interchange directly led to the cutting of a covenant between God and Abraham (Genesis 15:9-20). This chapter is what Abraham decided to believe and spent years developing his trust over. This is what made him a friend of God: he chose to believe and worked to get it into his heart as TRUE belief. It wasn’t external action. It wasn’t something he laboured over physically. He made a choice to believe and then started ignoring or putting away everything that didn’t align with that belief. What was the result? A literal NATION of people praising God. A nation of descendants from Abraham’s natural-born heir. They continue to grow today. Abraham ALSO has NATIONS of believers in the descendant of Abraham’s son: Jesus. Jesus was a natural descendant of Abraham. And through Jesus – the seed of promise – ALL nations of the WORLD were blessed. Millions of believers and growing. All of this – the Jewish nation and believers in Jesus as the Messiah of God (Jew and Gentile) – because Abraham BELIEVED God.

Summary

God can be trusted. Whether it looks likely, looks impossible, or you can’t even see it at all. God can be trusted. He is FAITHFUL. He is MERCIFUL. He is a GOOD FATHER. He is a friend and companion. He is a corrector and instructor. He is Lord and Saviour. He is Almighty God. He is a guide. He is all these things and more. He is worthy of our praise. What He says is possible IS possible. What He says will happen WILL happen. We don’t have to SEE it. We don’t have to BRING IT ABOUT. We don’t even need to PAY for it. We ONLY need to BELIEVE Him. That’s it. That’s all. Believe and work to get it into our hearts as TRUE belief.
