“God made the two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He also made the stars.“
Genesis 1:16
The ‘greatness’ of the sun and moon are in their proximity to Earth. In their ability to affect us. There are stars out there many times larger than our sun, but they aren’t in close enough proximity to us to be ‘greater’ than ours.
Time is added to their purpose here, establishing their orbits (and ours around the sun) – which is what gives them their ascendancy at various times. This way we don’t get too much sunlight and also receive the benefits of the wavelengths of light that the moon reflects. Indeed, some plants cannot complete their growth cycles without the benefits of moonlight no matter HOW much sunlight they receive. Early agriculture in many cultures was organized around the phases of the moon. Moonlight has been shown to have a tremendous effect on seed germination. Even though the lesser (moon) merely reflects the greater (sun), God still gave it position and honour. Lesser does NOT mean LESS THAN.
