“and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness. God saw that it was good.“
Genesis 1:18
His system was GOOD. The orbit and gravity wells and the intricate dance of celestial bodies rotating on their axis as they orbit in groups as their groups orbit other groups as the mega-groups are pulled toward other mega-groups was GOOD. If you really pay attention to how everything is moving and held in place WHILE they are moving and interacting and shifting, it will amaze you. And all of it designed to give us light and help us mark time – which otherwise is completely arbitrary and easy to lose track of. Seasons and rhythms and moments to be celebrated and noticed. And ALL of it was set in motion on this day, at this time. Think of that. Things going across our night sky were put into motion a LONG time ago just so that at that moment, when we were paying attention, it would be SEEN and NOTICED and CONFIRM what He was doing here on this Earth. That is a level of planning and an intricacy of motion in an engine that the human mind can barely conceive of – and certainly not master. What an AMAZING God we serve!
‘day’ (period of light) begins at sunrise and goes to sunset, when ‘night’ (period with an absence of light) begins. Together they make up a Day (period of time). What is the border? Evening and morning. Evening starts at sunset and lasts for an hour and a half (if you can see at least three starts, night has begun). Morning dawns before sunrise (if you can see less than three stars, day has begun). They each stay on their side of the borders and ‘rule’ or dominate those times – they are the primary feature of that time period.
‘rule over’ – The moon holds sway over our tides, their ebb and flow. The sun regulates the growth of all vegetation (photosynthesis), gives us our major heat source, and also contributes to the energy of the world (solar power, etc); it contributes to our continued existence on this planet.
