“God said, “Let the waters abound with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth in the open expanse of the sky.”“
Genesis 1:20
Notice that God isn’t creating anything Himself here. He is calling forth the possibilities that were pregnant in the waters. He is calling the waters to do what He put in them to do. He is calling forth prosperity, fruitfulness, and the fullness of the purpose for which the waters were given place. Since this is their purpose, I imagine that He can call on them anytime He wants and have them produce for Him again (such as in Luke 5:4–6; John 21:6–8; and Exodus 8:3).
All the ‘birds’ or ‘fowl’ came from the water, yet later there are birds coming from land (Genesis 2:19). This can appear as a contradiction, but it seems to be more something of their distinct classifications. For example, the birds of the sea or water fowl could have been created here and land fowl created later along with the beasts. Waterfowl or Anseriformes comprise about 180 separate species. Landfowl or Galliformes comprise about 290 species. They are distinct biological categories. Traditionally, we farm or domesticate from the landfowl, but not the waterfowl (though we are known to eat them). Not everyone agrees. Sages taught that it wasn’t about different categories, but rather they came from swamps (a mixture of water and land) so they were referred to as coming from both.
Everything with wings seems to have come forth on this day. Those creatures whose lives are about movement. Who rarely stay still. Fowl came out, but also swarms – such as flies, bees, ants, etc. Everything whose main part of life and living is made in the air.
