Take the Plunge: Genesis 1:23

There was evening and there was morning, a fifth day.
Genesis 1:23

Here the productivity of the waters is sealed. The fowl are set in their cycle of reproduction and living their lives on water and land. The seas are set in their fruitfulness – in small and big ways. It has all come about as God envisioned, planned, spoke, and released. He saw that it was GOOD and He named it so. Everything was just as He willed it. Evening began it and the morning saw it completed.

There are those who believe that God changed His mind about some things on this day. That He made leviathan male and female, but then killed the female and reserved her flesh for the feast of the saints in eternity to come. The male is neutered and left in preparation for use with Jonah in the days to come. They teach that He did this because if left to multiply on their own, this great creature would fill the earth and dominate it completely – being a detriment to humanity and the sea life. It is an idea that comes from leviathan being referred to as plural in Genesis and singular when it appears elsewhere in scripture. But I disagree with this. I don’t know why it was plural and then singular, but everything God created was GOOD. It was designed by Him and then it came to be EXACTLY as He envisioned it. Since He knows the ending from the beginning (Isaiah 46:10) even to the point of putting in place Jesus’ sacrifice before anything was created (Revelation 13:8), I cannot conceive of Him not ‘realising’ the problem BEFORE He created the creature(s). God would not create something that in and of itself would be a problem. He wouldn’t suddenly see an issue and change it. He knows BEFORE He does something the effect of that thing. Humanity was created with the ability to CHOOSE. They didn’t HAVE to rebel, disobey, and sin. But leviathan was a creature following biological instruction. That isn’t choice. That isn’t free will. God wouldn’t have created something He HAD to destroy because it would mess up the world. God only created GOOD. Everything came into being EXACTLY as He planned. I don’t know the reason for the plural/singular change of language, but it will not have been because God created in error. That is against His character and against His words (it is good, it is very good).
