“The heavens, the earth, and all their vast array were finished.“
Genesis 2:1
‘their vast array’ is referencing more than just the sun, moon, and stars. This is also referring to the Heavenly realms. Angels, the City, etc. At this point – even though we have only been shown the physical side (the stuff of the Earth-realm) – EVERYTHING has been created at this point. Visible to us and invisible to us. It is ALL finished.
This is a testimony that God created for six days and finished creation at the end of them. This is a testimony to the completeness of creation. Nothing missing. Nothing broken. It was SHALOM. This is the source of the seventh day. God loved what He had created and saw that it was VERY GOOD and so blessed the seventh day, commemorating the goodness and completeness of what He had created. Everything that was needed to function as He had designed was there. Now humanity could work it, increasing in discernment and intelligence as they did so.
The sages teach that all creation is in three spheres. 1) the world of angels (spiritual world), 2) outer space or the planetary constellations, and 3) the atmosphere and earth (our habitat). The world of angels acts on outer space and outer space exerts its impact on our habitat (times and seasons, for example). They point to Hosea 2:21-22 as proof of the idea: “It will happen in that day, that I will respond,” says Yahweh. “I will respond to the heavens, and they will respond to the earth; and the earth will respond to the grain, and the new wine, and the oil; and they will respond to Jezreel.“
It is also believed by the sages that not only the actual physical heavens and earth, but also the abundance of the creatures within them – with all their abilities and roles – was completed. This is a key idea, because it is believed that at this time God gave special instructions to items within His creation so that in future they would adhere to the roles they were to play. For example, the celestial bodies being given instructions to listen to Joshua for when he would command them to stand still. It is believed that had God not done this, the planets would not have disobeyed the instructions God gave to them when He put them in place. So God gave provision for the future miracles (miraculous not only for His supernatural power demonstrated but also miraculous that they left their ordained place and/or role) and signs that they would be called upon to participate in. That sounds reasonable, but it also sounds to be like human thinking. I believe God could call on ANY of His creation at ANY time and get it to respond in ANY way since His ‘new’ command would have exactly as much authority and power as His ‘original’ command.
