“This is the history of the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that Yahweh God made the earth and the heavens.“
Genesis 2:4
In the same way that Chronicles is Holy Spirit’s commentary or take on the journey of the Israelites, this chapter is Holy Spirit’s commentary or take on creation. It is an examination of the highlights. The things that are memorable or important to Holy Spirit. A closer look at specific things and how they came about. The first chapter was a visual record, God showing Moses what happened and Moses describing it. This is God’s record of what happened, the history of the creation as He saw it.
Again the Lord reiterates that He made all the stuff of heaven and all the stuff of earth from His own thoughts all at the same time (Hebrews 11:3) – and then He formed and placed the individual components where He envisioned them being.
Here we have the proper Name of God for the first time. In Genesis 1 He was ELOHIM – Supreme God. Here He is YAHWEH ELOHIM – Self-Existent Supreme God. The God who completes His work. God of power AND perfection. He exists and IS of Himself. All things are dependent on Him, He having given all things their existence. This is the redeeming, covenant Name of God. It is His personal Name.
