“What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding” (1 Corinthians 14:15, MEV). God gave us song in order to sing His praises. He didn’t do this because His ego needed stroking. The first commandments are not Him throwing His weight around and demanding preeminence in our lives because it makes Him feel good. He isn’t selfish. He gave us the ability to praise Him so that WE would align with HIM. He gave us the commandments to put Him first above all things always and ever, so that we could maintain our focus on HIM instead of whatever is going on with us. I’ve had one of two praise songs running through my mind for a few days. When I get up at 2am. When I’m preparing meals. When I’m doing chores. When I’m working. They are there. Then last night I had the opportunity to give into a circumstance. To sink into it and give it weight. But I didn’t. It wasn’t comfortable. And it was NOT fun, but it was a mild thing because I could FOCUS on Him. On what Jesus has made available to me. The circumstance tried to come on me and washed off of me, because I was ALREADY practised on focusing on Him. He loved me enough to prepare me ahead of time so that I would have HIS perspective on what was happening. This is what He does. This is what He makes available to us. This is how He operates. He LOVES us into proper behaviour/thinking/speaking aligned with Him so that WE can benefit from it. So that WE can draw from Him. So that WE can overcome inside of HIS overcoming. What a GREAT God!
