“Do not let anyone cheat you of your reward by delighting in false humility and the worship of angels, dwelling on those things which he has not seen, vainly arrogant due to his unspiritual mind,” (Colossians 2:18, MEV). False humility is when you DO think you’re better than other people, but are pretending that you are not in order to achieve a selfish gain or advantage. I find it interesting that Holy Spirit put that attitude on the same level as the worship of angels (something ANY true angel is VEHEMENTLY against – Revelation 22:8-9). Much like witchcraft, false humility is a kind of rebellion against the natural order, or idolatry. We are meant to worship Yahweh God Almighty because He IS God. It is right and natural. When we rebel against that, we are putting an idol before Him. Sometimes it is actual worship (witchcraft, other religions, etc). Sometimes it is a value (money, security, a spouse, etc). And sometimes it is simply putting ourselves above others, putting the value we have in ourselves above the value we place on others. This is THE original sin (Isaiah 14:12-14). God loves us, and God wants us to love ourselves, but He does NOT want us to PUT ourselves above others. ALL of us are JUST AS IMPORTANT in His eyes. We are EQUALS. That’s why we were commanded to steward this world, to have dominion (NOT domination) over it – but NOT over each other. Pride, false humility, and simple self-interest are all fruit from the tree of idolatry. From the tree of SELF. Jesus came to model a behaviour for us that will not only bless US, but bless those AROUND us. A model of servanthood. We are all fellow servants of the Most High God. We are all in it together. When we remember that, we join together and we join with God, in TRUE love. TRUE compassion. That we have such an ability to love is proof of the love He gives us. The love that originates with Himself. He loves us, and so WE can love others just as dearly and clearly as we love ourselves.
