“The man said, “This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh. She will be called ‘woman,’ because she was taken out of Man.”“
Genesis 2:23
This is the male’s name for the female. God STILL hasn’t referred to them by anything other than the generic ‘Adam’ or ‘human being’. It was the male, seeing in her the perfect counterpart for him, not being brought up out of the dirt (like the living creatures), but fashioned by God’s hands out of what they had been (a single entity), who named her appropriately according to her nature – which is the same process they had gone through with the living creatures. Here, the male has the female, perfect halves of a single whole. He recognized her origin, her nature, and her complete and total compatibility with himself as an equal and named her as such. What was once a single being was now divided into two separate entities that were capable of relating to one another physically, emotionally, and intellectually. It is interesting that the male’s first and near-instant reaction is one of poetic verse, seeking through words to bring an understanding they both can share of what he is feeling, sensing, and noticing – his physical, emotional, and intellectual reaction.
All the words and pronouns that accurately describe the female have the male connotation in them: ‘she’, ‘her’, and ‘female’ have ‘he’ or ‘male’ as part of the word. We are inseparable. This is also why there is a HUGE push today to see pronouns changed or altered to almost indecipherable nonsense. They want to carve an identity without the male-female dichotomy that God instituted and Adam (both halves) not only recognized, but rejoiced in. It is a move designed to further remove human beings from the BLESSING of God. As such, behind this move, is a demonic doctrine. According to God there is only male and female. Anything that ‘seems’ natural is either an aberration caused by the Fall (a deformity or a degeneration, for example – which though caused by Sin in the world isn’t sinful or necessarily the result of someone’s personal transgression.) or something being pushed by the forces of darkness to rob us of our rightful place.
The sage Ibn Ezra writes: ‘AND THE MAN SAID. Then Adam said, “This time I have found a help meet like me for me, for this being came out of me.” The tradition concerning Lilith is a homily*. [*There is a Rabbinic tradition that before the creation of Eve, Adam lived with the female demon Lilith. Hence he said, “This one, in contradistinction to Lilith, is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh.” Cf. L. Ginsberg, Legends of the Jews, Vol. I., p. 65.]’ This homily he refers to came from the ALPHABET OF BEN SIRA, a narrative, satirical work, written probably in the geonic period in the East (589-1038 AD). Before that, Lilith was the name of demons used in Aramaic incantation bowls (roughly 400–800 AD), or generic male and female demons in ancient Babylonian religious stories. It wasn’t until the eighth century AD that the name became tied to Hebrew myth and legends. I’ve never really seen this as a possible first wife of Adam since their main contention was over sexual position (neither would be submissive) originating in the idea that they were both made from the dust and therefore both 100% equal. But until the Fall, there WAS no submission. There was only prefect relationship and total partnership. There wasn’t even a real chain-of-command relationship between them. They first male and female were created as perfect, totally compatible help-mates. In addition to this, there was NO demonic involvement with humanity until Genesis 3 when the devil conned the snake into presenting his arguments and getting humanity to submit to him and thereby get his foot into the door (as it were). Before that, it was humanity who held the keys and nothing could get in without their permission – this was the way God protected them and creation from the fallen angels who were biding their time until they were tossed into Hell for their rebellion (Matthew 25:41). Now, that is the origin of the legend of Lilith and my opinion. You can do more reading here (https://jwa.org/encyclopedia/article/lilith) – it is an excellent article and the best of the research I’ve done. I think my opinion of this story as a total myth is accurate and biblical, but I admit my own research might not be correct. You’ll have to talk to Holy Spirit about it and get your own opinion.
The sage Sforno writes: ‘הפעם הזאת, finally, this time עצם מעצמי ובשר מבשרי, only this time, seeing that all females of the future will not be fashioned by the male undergoing such type of surgery.’ I think the text is clearly stating that it is through birth that we will get all future males and females, this time with Adam (the single entity which God divided) is the ONLY time hands needed to fashion male and female; and also that only God is worthy to do that kind of fashioning. I’m not knocking plastic surgery and medical talents, I’m only saying that from this text humans do not seem to be equipped to decide who is and who isn’t meant to be male or female and then fashion them that way.
The sage Rabbeinu Bahya writes: ‘This may also be the reason that the Torah wrote וייצר, when describing the formation of Adam as the word is similar to יוצר, “a potter,” someone who uses soft clay as his raw material. When the woman was formed however, the Torah used the expression ויבן, “He built,” instead of וייצר, “He shaped like a potter.” The term ויבן reminds us of a builder who builds a solid structure, something made of hard materials, not of clay. Perhaps this is the reason that the psalmist in Psalms 103,13 speaks of G-d being merciful to His בנים, “sons” as a father is merciful, whereas when describing toughness, Proverbs 31,1 speaks of משא אשר יסרתו אמו, “a rebuke administered by his mother.” The mother, being made of sterner stuff, admonishes instead of displaying pity.’
