“Seth lived one hundred five years, then became the father of Enosh. Seth lived after he became the father of Enosh eight hundred seven years, and became the father of other sons and daughters. All of the days of Seth were nine hundred twelve years, then he died.“
(Genesis 5:6-8)
Seth named his firstborn Enosh. It could be from the noun איש (‘ish) means man, or rather man of in some specific function such as “man of war” or “man of the earth.” It’s also the common word for husband. Cain named his firstborn Enoch. We can see how closely the names in this section parallel one another. Enoch is from the root חנך (hanak), to inaugurate or train. Cain’s son was being trained up into Cain’s philosophy of life (away from God). Seth’s son was becoming a man under God’s eye, living out his role. Perhaps he had a hand in organising communal worship, since Genesis 4:26 tells us that in his day people began formally calling on God’s name (speculation, but possible).
Adam was 235 years old when Enosh was born. Seth died 112 years after Adam. These men were around a LONG time to give advice and teaching to not only the next generation, but MANY generations after them.
