“Enoch lived sixty-five years, then became the father of Methuselah. After Methuselah’s birth, Enoch walked with God for three hundred years, and became the father of more sons and daughters. All the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty-five years. Enoch walked with God, and he was not found, for God took him.“
(Genesis 5:21-24)
Methuselah means ‘when he is dead it shall be sent’ or ‘man of a javelin’ from (1) the noun מת (mat), man, or מות (mut), death, and (2) the verb שלח (shalah), to send or let go. Interestingly, Methuselah died in the year of the Flood.
Enoch had other kids, but he lived on this Earth the fewest years of all the patriarchs. He had kids at the youngest age (65 years) and he died the youngest of them all (365 years). Enoch ended his time on Earth before Seth died. He left 57 years after Adam died and 669 years before the Flood.
Enoch, descendant of Seth, was the seventh generation from Adam (being the first). He was a RIGHTEOUS man. On the other side, the seventh generation from Adam descended through Cain was an UNGODLY man (took two wives and also was a killer). Enoch WALKED with God (Amos 3:3). Lamech was deceived by the devil (Amos 3:5). The two lines were VERY different because the men in them followed VERY different thinking.
Why was Enoch taken to Heaven, translated instead of dying? Our only clues are his habit of walking WITH God and what Holy Spirit said about him in Hebrews 11:5-6 “By faith Enoch was taken away, so that he wouldn’t see death, and he was not found, because God translated him. For he has had testimony given to him that before his translation he had been well pleasing to God. Without faith it is impossible to be well pleasing to him, for he who comes to God must believe that he exists, and that he is a rewarder of those who seek him.” Enoch TRUSTED God and Enoch WALKED with God. He put God first. He sought His face. He spent TIME with God and LISTENED to God. He AGREED with God and modelled his words, thoughts, and actions on God’s character. It must have been a TREMENDOUS walk because Moses spent 80 days on the mountain with God, talked with Him consistently, and was not translated. Enoch’s walk was unique and close. [The only other person to be translated without death was Elijah – 2 Kings 2. The only other person spoken of a walking with God was Noah – Genesis 6:9]
