“Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is of God, so that we might know the things that are freely given to us by God” (1 Corinthians 2:12, MEV). My firstborn didn’t start speaking all at once. Instead, they had a word that they used: de-doof. They used it for everything. One day, they put their hand on the fridge and asked for de-doof. I opened the fridge and offered the usual things that they liked. They shook their head and said de-doof. This continued. I started pulling things out of the fridge. De-doof. De-doof. Eventually, I had everything out of the fridge. Every single thing. Not one thing was what they wanted. They wanted de-doof. It was simultaneously one of the funniest things and one of the most frustrating things. I’m sure they wanted something that we usually kept in the fridge, but something that we didn’t currently have. To this day I have no idea what they wanted. This is NOT the situation that Jesus wants us in. There are things God has for us. A call we have been given. Equipment we have been provided. Empowerment that has been poured into us. But if we cannot understand Him, it is all just so much de-doof. But God gave us Holy Spirit. We are indwelt by Him. It gives us access to the mind of Messiah so that we would know what’s on His mind. So that we can comprehend by Holy Spirit what God is saying to us. What God is offering to us. And what His Word says to us. We have been given the ability to comprehend God by God so that we are not stuck staring at a bunch of letters on a page, but that we will be able to communicate and fellowship with our loving God, friend, Saviour, and Lord.
