“In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the fountains of the great deep burst open, and the sky’s windows opened. It rained on the earth forty days and forty nights.”
(Genesis 7:11-12)
The water came up from below and it also came down from above (Proverbs 3:20). Science has proven that this is not some fantasy early human writers came up with. Holy Spirit wrote the Word and He always wrote TRUTH. We’ve discovered that instead of being a myth, there is EVIDENCE of more than three times the Earth’s ocean volume is under the crust. More than 600 kilometres below the surface of the Earth, there is a MASSIVE amount of H2O trapped in a mineral known as ringwoodite. This is deep mantle rock. Imagine what would happen to the surface of the Earth and the tectonic plates if that water was to be released to rise to the surface. What new fissures in the mantle would appear? What shifts and movements of the continental plates would we see? How different would the face of the world be? It would be a massive, rapid, unbelievably catastrophic change. It is not inconceivable that the Flood was the cause of the breaking up of the supercontinent Pangaea to the separate continents that we see today. Add to that water coming from above – whether from the water cycle as we know it today or from the theoretical water layer some scientists believe existed (however, it would mean that physics, atmospheric science, and fluid mechanics worked VERY differently to our understanding of them today OR that the water was in a different form, such as a crystalline form, making the Earth something like a greenhouse). There is also the idea that there was a layer of water somewhere between the physical realm and the spiritual realm – and only God would understand how that worked or how it could fall only on the Earth (Genesis 1:7; Revelation 21:1). No matter how it actually happened in specifics, it is clear that God brought water UP and water DOWN and through this UNUSUAL and UNIQUE occurrence, flooded the entire world. The process lasted for forty days and forty nights before it stopped and then the Earth slowly absorbed the water, leaving us with the surface world that we know and can observe today (including the water cycle as we understand it).
The rain fell for forty days, but as we see later the water from below continued to rise for more days before they too began to recede (Genesis 7:24).
The sage Ibn Ezra writes: ‘DEEP. The word tehom (deep) may be either masculine or feminine. Similarly tehom in The deep (tehom) made it grow (Ezek. 31:4), is in the feminine. The Bible does not mention the streams because their waters come from the fountains. When the fountains of the deep broke up, their waters gushed upward and the windows of the heavenly storehouse of water were opened and their contents poured down upon the earth. The earth was confounded; there was no way of telling day from night. Proof of the latter is God’s promise to Noah after the flood that and day and night shall not cease (Gen. 8:22). When the rain ceased falling from the heavens, Noah knew that forty days and forty nights had passed, for God revealed to him this secret. AND THE WINDOWS OF HEAVEN. The word arubbot (windows) has the same meaning as arubbot (window) in Behold, if the Lord should make windows (arubbot) in heaven (II Kings 7:2). The term window or storehouse (Deut. 28:12) when referring to heaven is in keeping with human language and practice. Some say that the alef of arubbot (windows) is a root letter and that arubbot is similar to kevudot (riches). Others say that the alef of arubbot is not a root letter. It is similar to the alef in agorat (piece of) (I Sam. 2:36). Both arubbot and agorat come from roots whose last two letters are the same. On the seventeenth day of the second month, the day the flood started, Noah and his family entered the ark. At that time Noah brought into the ark the animals, cattle and the creeping things and fowl. Bird is a general term for a winged creature. The great miracle was that they all came two by two of their own volition.
