“For I will be merciful toward their unrighteousness, and their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.”” (Hebrews 8:12, MEV). This is not a stand-alone concept (Isaiah 43:25; Jeremiah 31:31–34, 50:20; Micah 7:18–19). We have a REALLY hard time understanding this. I think this was one of the shocks Jesus experienced when He came as a man. There He was. Fully human. And surrounded by people that were CHOOSING not to forget transgressions. Remembering slights. Remembering things other people said to them. Sometimes from YEARS ago. People bringing up past actions. Even bringing up PERCEIVED slights – things in their own mind and not what really happened. One of the negative results of eating of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil is that we are desperate for knowledge. We’re so desperate for it, we don’t want to forget ANYTHING. It is hard-wired into our physical DNA. But not Jesus. He NEVER remembers forgiven sin. He doesn’t judge us by our performance, and when we get ourselves aligned with Him, agreeing with His point of view, accepting what He did for us, we get FORGIVEN. True repentance brings forgiveness. Forgiveness brings forgetfulness of transgression in God’s mind. He is right there with us through the consequences of our actions, thoughts, and words. But we are NEVER treated as the doers of that sin because once we repented and got forgiven, we were no longer the spiritual doer of that sin. He FORGOT it. Isn’t that a great gift? He never brings it up again. He never treats us with kid gloves because of something we said or did or mentally dwelt on. He forgets. He treats us as Jesus deserves to be treated. We’re CLEAN. That’s an incredible gift. It is a great proof of God’s love that He doesn’t hold forgotten sin against us. EVER.
