“When Jehu came out to the servants of his lord and one said to him, “Is all well? Why did this madman come to you?” He said to them, “You know the man and how he talks.” They said, “That is a lie. Tell us now.” He said, “He said to me, ‘Yahweh says, I have anointed you king over Israel.’” Then they hurried, and each man took his cloak, and put it under him on the top of the stairs, and blew the trumpet, saying, “Jehu is king.””
(2 Kings 9:11-13)
“Coming to the disciples, he saw a great multitude around them, and scribes questioning them. Immediately all the multitude, when they saw him, were greatly amazed, and running to him, greeted him. He asked the scribes, “What are you asking them?” One of the multitude answered, “Teacher, I brought to you my son, who has a mute spirit; and wherever it seizes him, it throws him down; and he foams at the mouth, grinds his teeth, and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they weren’t able.” He answered him, “Unbelieving generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I bear with you? Bring him to me.””
(Mark 9:14-19)
Elisha sent one of the prophets to anoint Jehu king. The prophet obeyed. Jehu tried to keep it quiet, but when faced with telling the truth he did. Those soldiers he spoke the truth to, didn’t question it. They didn’t ask for confirmation. They IMMEDIATELY believed the word of the Lord and declared Jehu king. They gave him their loyalty and worked to get him into the position he should have – which included going to war if necessary. They believed and they backed it up with action. Because they KNEW that God’s word as spoken by a prophet could BE believed.
Jesus came off the mountain to see his disciples and some of the Judean Pharisees arguing. None of them believing. All of them splitting hairs and debating about how things should be done. The ‘properness’ of the procedures. And once again Jesus points to the heart of the issue. Belief. Trust. If they trusted God, they could get out of the way and let God work. If they didn’t, they would limit God by insisting on their understanding. Trying to do things our way is like trying to force God to work this way at this time for this goal. It NEVER works. Jesus dealt with the situation by LISTENING to His Father, doing what His Father said, and NOTHING else. Jesus BELIEVED and backed it up with action.
Summary
Jesus’ life is marked by many things. One of the biggest is obedience. Jesus ONLY did what the Father showed Him and ONLY spoke what the Father gave Him to say. Jesus KNEW the Father could be trusted. Jesus BELIEVED that what the Father said and showed Him would come to pass. Period. It was THAT simple – and I am sure it was just as hard for Jesus as a people as it is for us as people. But trusting in the Word of God is the ONLY way to fly. It is how we live our lives in Him. Our trust is our offering to the Lord. It is the rightful response to God. It is how we please Him. He ENJOYS it when we love Him enough to trust Him with our belief (Hebrews 11:6). It’s how we are justified in our relationship with Him (Romans 5:1). And it is also how we become true friends with God (James 2:23). If we want to walk in the fullness of the BLESSING of a relationship with God, we NEED to learn to be a BELIEVING generation.
