“The sons of Merari: Mahli, Libni his son, Shimei his son, Uzzah his son, Shimea his son, Haggiah his son, Asaiah his son. These are they whom David set over the service of song in Yahweh’s house after the ark came to rest there. They ministered with song before the tabernacle of the Tent of Meeting until Solomon had built Yahweh’s house in Jerusalem. They performed the duties of their office according to their order.”
(1 Chronicles 6:29-32)
““Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. Those along the road are those who hear; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their heart, that they may not believe and be saved. Those on the rock are they who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; but these have no root. They believe for a while, then fall away in time of temptation. What fell among the thorns, these are those who have heard, and as they go on their way they are choked with cares, riches, and pleasures of life; and they bring no fruit to maturity. Those in the good ground, these are those who with an honest and good heart, having heard the word, hold it tightly, and produce fruit with perseverance.”
(Luke 8:11-15)
There were a lot of Levites. They run the full range from very faithful to not faithful at all. To those who disobeyed and were cut off to those who were faithful and raised up. There were jealousies and rebellions and pious people and those demanding repentance when the people went wrong. Among them were those who sang. Who worshipped the Lord by leading others into worship. Into helping to create the atmosphere that is most conducive to humbly submitting to the Lord and putting Him in His proper place as God and King of the Universe. They were lovers of the Lord and they faithfully used their talents to help bring others into that same place of worship and submission to Yahweh God Almighty.
The Word does the same kind of calling. It is spread abroad into our hearts, ready to take seed in the soil it finds, and do a work within us. Sadly, most people haven’t prepared their hearts. They look to the surface things. They look to the trappings of a relationship with God. But they never dig deeper or seek longer. They don’t spend the time to be ready. To desire it. To learn to love the Lord. But there ARE those who do. Who take the time to pray and worship. Who listen and then don’t let go of what they heard. Reminding themselves of it. Looking into it on their own. Praying about it. Meditating about it. Seeking God’s face and submitting to His authority. Taking the Word and letting it transform them from regular people to true lovers of the Lord and worshippers of their King.
Summary
In this life, we are either helpers of encouragement or hinderers of growth. Our role is one of blessing. We are meant to help each other. Encourage each other. Help us get to the place where our hearts are prepared to receive the Word (Ephesians 5:19-21). There is always something we can do and always something we can say to help foster one another into a better relationship with the Lord. Not out of judgment or a desire to point fingers. Out of a desire to see the best parts of us grow into even greater abundance. Out of a desire to see us all succeed in our walks of obedience and worship to God. Out of a desire to help with the harvest, not restrict it.
