“Indeed, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Therefore do not fear. You are more valuable than many sparrows” (Luke 12:7, MEV). God loves us enough to number our hairs. Many parents keep the curls of their babies when they cut their hair. Sometimes just the first time. Other times throughout their development journey. Taking milestone reminders. I don’t think any of us have tried numbering the hairs though. Imagine finding a hair on a counter and knowing that it was #12845. How familiar would you need to be with someone in order to do that? I think most of us can recognize a hair as ours or someone else’s, but we do it by colour or maybe length. We don’t have labels attached. We don’t stamp numbers. But that is how closely we are watched by the Lord. That is how well He knows us. He knows which number hair we are holding. And as they fall out, get pulled out, and grow again, He knows the new number. He assigns it. He remembers it. That is intimate knowledge. That is paying attention. Think of the size of the universe(s) and all that goes on within. He knows the hairs on your head. This is a God who cares about YOU. This is a God who says that you are special. This is a God who pays attention to the small things. We get weird sometimes about talking to God about the small things. We think that He doesn’t care about our wardrobe choices, soap choices, whether we talk to the neighbour or not, and what is happening day to day in the little places. But He does. He numbers our hairs! He cares about the little things AND the big things. He cares about the whole package. The entirety of who we are. What we do. What we think. What we say. Everything. Not because He’s trying to catch us out or to keep us from something. Because He loves us. All of us. The WHOLE of us. Because He wants to be that intimate with us. Because He’s inviting us to be that intimate with Him. For it to be a two-way street. He will come in to us and we can go in to Him. This is the God who created us. This is the God who walks with us. A God who wants a relationship so close with us that we can number each other’s hair. He is more than knowable. He is INTIMATELY knowable.
