“Pray in the Spirit always with all kinds of prayer and supplication. To that end be alert with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints” (Ephesians 6:18, MEV). God loves us enough to let us be a blessing to each other. He doesn’t have to. He is GOD ALMIGHTY. He doesn’t NEED us. But He has chosen to establish a system where we have His permission to help each other, to bless each other, to fellowship with each other, and to create community with each other. We don’t have to go it alone. In fact, He encourages us not to (Ecclesiastes 4:12). One of the pieces of armour that Jesus wore (Ephesians 6:10–18) was the ability to pray in the Spirit at all times and in all places. Which Jesus did regularly (Luke 5:16, 22:32; Mark 1:35; John 17:6-19). This is also what we are called to do. We are empowered and given permission to wear His armour. Which means we are empowered and have permission to pray for each other. The great thing is that we don’t have to KNOW who we’re praying for. God might lay it on our hearts to pray for someone who is doing a similar thing to us. Or He might lay an impression on us of someone who needs prayer. Or He might bring to mind someone we’ve heard of, but don’t know. God asks us to pray for each other. It is a privilege and an honour. After all, life in the Kingdom is about service to each other. It isn’t all about us. Humans have a tendency to be self-centred. We are all the star of our film. But if you walk down the street and look around, you’re surrounded by people. All of whom are the stars of their films. We’re all the same. Just people. Making our way through this life. Facing the same challenges, the same temptations, and the same struggles. We are very well suited to pray for each other. We know what it’s like. We know what type of words to say. We are aware of the struggle. When God calls, it isn’t always about us. Sometimes, someone else needs a lifeline. Someone else needs help. And we get to work with God, hand in hand, to minister to them. We can do it face to face, but we can also do it anonymously. In our hearts. Wherever we find ourselves. Called to pray for someone we don’t know, but who we can bring before the Lord. We can pray for one another. It is a beautiful thing. We pray for you. You pray for us. We both pray for them. When God calls, answer. When He lays it on your heart, lift it up to Him. No matter when. No matter where. We’re all in this together.
