“Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up” (James 4:10, MEV). God loves us in order not to hold us against us. He knows what we are. He loves us. And if we acknowledge our relationship properly, there is nothing He doesn’t do for us. Thankfully, that doesn’t mean we get what WE want. It means He does for us what is good and right from HIS point of view. But if we know what our position is in relation to Him, that is a BLESSING (Isaiah 55:8-9). We’re NEVER told to be vulnerable in the Word. We’re told we ARE vulnerable and then what to do about it. Vulnerability is a terrible thing. What we need to be is HUMBLE. If you’re humble you’re not putting yourself above your place OR trying to bring someone else down. You’re about building up everyone around you and acknowledging your own worth at the same time – you’re not a doormat. If we taught humbleness in school and the workforce we’d have a wonderful culture and no one would have to feel vulnerable. Being humble isn’t puffing yourself up or making out to be something you’re not. In relation to the Lord that means we are aware we are human. Yes, made in His image. Yes, made in His likeness. Yes, a wonderful creation. But we are NOT God. We give Him His place. We submit to Him. Not because we’re scared. Not to avoid being judged. Because He is God and we are not. We acknowledge the properness of our two positions. And in doing that, we seek to obey. Because He is God. We submit to Him and obey. He is many things to us. He is also Lord. He is right. He is good. He is merciful. He should be obeyed. We don’t have to worry about being doormats or poor little things. He overcame the world so that we could overcome in Him. He lifts us up. Properly. His way in His time. When He does, we’ll still be humble. We’ll still be us. He’ll still be God. But we will be blessed and joy-filled because He is God. Because He is good. Be humble. It is FREEING.
