“Godly sorrow produces repentance that leads to salvation and brings no regret, but the sorrow of the world produces death” (2 Corinthians 7:10, MEV). God loves us enough to give us the opportunity to embrace His life. Life on this planet comes with a lot of regrets because the world is not built up on truth. The world is not designed for comfort. We do things, then we find out what’s really happening, and regret what we did. We suffer loss and so we grieve – often deeply without anything to stem the tide. This is not an abundant life. This is varying levels of defeat. Little deaths. God did not want that for us. God did not want us to have an intimate knowledge of evil. Of lack. Of loss. This is not what we were designed to participate in. All of that comes from being separated from God. In God there is life. There is peace. He is good. He blesses, giving generously until there is overflow. There is no death in God. We were designed to be models of Him. In His image and in His likeness. Little versions of Him. Near identical, but without the God-ness that makes Him God. This was what we were to experience. This is what we were to live out. This was the plan. This is what godly sorrow is meant to do: show us the gap between where we are and where God says we can be. It isn’t about loss or lack or grief. It is us being shown where we should be walking and what we should be experiencing. Jesus is what bridges that gap. In Him, we get to be everything God designed us to be. In Him, we get to have everything God says we can have whenever God says we can have it. No limitations. If He says it, we can experience it. We get to have life and life abundantly in and through Jesus. Godly sorrow helps us to align ourselves with God. To choose to think like He thinks about things. To act like He says to act. To speak how He says to speak. To live our lives in Him and let Him live through us. When we do that, there is never anything to regret. Ever.
