“At that time, Eli was lying down in his place (now his eyes had begun to grow weak that he could not see), and the lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the house of the Lord where the ark of God was. Then the Lord called to Samuel, and he answered, “Here I am.”” (1 Samuel 3:2-4, MEV). God loves us enough to call us. And He DOES call us. In the middle of the night. In the middle of the day. When we’re doing nothing particular. When we’re in the middle of a task. God talks to us. He calls to us. He makes an effort to get our attention. Sometimes, it’s because that is the first step in a new level of relationship with Him. Sometimes, it’s because He wants to tell us something. Sometimes, it’s because He has something He wants us to tell someone else. Sometimes, it’s because He has something for us to pray about. And sometimes, it’s because He wants to say hello. There are times that God simply wants to spend time with us. To interact with us. We will never know which one it is unless we answer Him. Unless we respond to His voice. For myself, I find it harder to respond during the day than at night. At night, there is a distinct difference between when I wake up for whatever reason and when God wakes me up. During the day, I don’t have that advantage. I have to be listening for His voice. I have to quiet myself a little. Kind of like when you keep one ear open for your kids or whatever else you’re listening to while you work. It isn’t easy because it’s easy to get caught up in whatever I’m doing. But it IS possible. We all need to learn what His voice sounds like. If we are serious about our time in the Word and our worship, we’ll know it. Jesus promised that we would (John 10:27). What we need to learn to do is to LISTEN to that voice. To RESPOND to that voice. To OBEY that voice. It won’t ever tell you to do anything that’s contrary to the Word. God doesn’t do that. He doesn’t seek to confuse us. God is always looking to speak to us. To talk with us. To communicate. Don’t let what you’re doing ever get more important than listening to Him. Actively listening where we respond and obey. God wants communication with you. God wants a relationship with you. God speaks. Will you answer?
