He is the one who forgives all your sins, who heals all your diseases,
Psalm 103:3 (emphasis added)
Jewish commentary on this verse notes that it is referring to both physical and spiritual ailments (Steinsaltz commentary). This Psalm was written by David. David is calling his own self to recall the wonders of Elohim. David is reminding his own self of what Adonai had ALREADY DONE for him. Included in that list is forgiveness, restored health, deliverance, love, satisfaction, and renewed energy. These are things that David experienced himself. In this life. Yahweh is a God of HEALING on ALL levels. This is Nature of God stuff.
There are those that look on Elohim as petulant. Childish. Harsh. Unforgiving and judgmental. They point to incidents in the Old Covenant to prove their attitude. Yet it is always looking at a situation from OUR point of view. It is NEVER looking at the situation from HIS point of view or even from a perspective of DISEASE. Sin is a disease. It spreads like one. It is an infection. A thing that was not meant to be, but was CHOSEN. We have to deal with the effects of that CHOICE. Jesus came to give us a DIFFERENT choice. Remain in our original choice or to choose to enter into a new choice. Until every single human being on earth has the chance to make that choice, things remain. Once everyone has had the chance to make that choice, things will end. Not end forever. But this reality will be rolled up like a mat and put away so that the NEW reality – the one WITHOUT sin – can be rolled out for us to live in.
When we think about that new reality, the only things we have to go on are how it started here and the nature of Adonai. He created a perfect world. Nothing killed anything else. Land animals ate plants. All of them. There were NO carnivores (Genesis 1:30). There were plants. Fruit. Fish, birds, and living creatures (including cattle, creeping things, and wild animals). Nothing killed anything. They lived in harmony. In a lush world. And humanity was there. Speaking spirits. Made in Adonai’s image. Male and female. Also given all the seed-bearing plants to eat. Everything we needed right there. THAT was what we were and are supposed to be.
There was NO death. Nothing that comes FROM death. Adam was alone, but not lonely. It was good, but not as good as it could be. Adam and Eve were brought together. Two parts along with Adonai to make a triumvirate union of complete totality. THAT was the plan. Connection. Health. Growth. Blessing. ABUNDANT LIFE (John 10:10). It is what we HAD and what He wants us to HAVE. Adonai is consistent (Psalm 102:25-27). What was good then is good now and will be good for as long as there is an ever. This is how He is. We have fallen, but He raises us up (James 4:10).
We look at today’s verse and can see the consistency of Adonai. He IS the one who heals us. He IS the one who forgives us. Those two things are inexorably linked. If you are FORGIVEN you can be HEALED. If you know Adonai HEALS you know that Adonai can FORGIVE. “After getting into a boat he crossed to the other side and came to his own town. Just then some people brought to him a paralytic lying on a stretcher. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Have courage, son! Your sins are forgiven.” Then some of the experts in the law said to themselves, “This man is blaspheming!” When Jesus perceived their thoughts he said, “Why do you respond with evil in your hearts? Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven’ or to say, ‘Stand up and walk’? But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—then he said to the paralytic—“Stand up, take your stretcher, and go home.” So he stood up and went home. When the crowd saw this, they were afraid and honored God who had given such authority to men” (Matthew 9:1-8).
It wasn’t a one-time thing. “Dear friend, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, just as it is well with your soul” (3 John 1:2). Adonai is first and foremost concerned with your spirit. He wants it restored. He wants sin out of the way. He wants relationship. He wants things to be as He designed them and created them to be. When our spirit is renewed, our soul can prosper. We can access what is in our spirit and engage it with our soul. When our soul is prospering, then our bodies WILL follow suit. Our bodies are TERRIBLE at decision making. They go with the flow. The flow will be natural or it will be spiritual. They are curious and go with the current we are exposing them to.
You may have heard of pontius fish (called travelling fish or puti fish). They’re freshwater fish of the carp family and they are CURIOUS. They follow currents. Wherever they lead. Into a bucket. Into a net. Across land. From one pool to another. It doesn’t matter. They literally go with the flow. Fisherman have exploited this to easily catch them. Well, our bodies are like that. They go with the flow, no matter WHERE it leads. The question becomes what is the flow that you are releasing.
David had the same question facing him. If you read the whole Psalm (103), you see him DEMANDING that his body and soul remember what Adonai has done for him. He DEMANDS not only remembrance but also WORSHIP. Thanking and praising the Father for what He has brought to pass. Remembering that not ONLY did Adonai save his soul but also that Adonai HEALED him. Restored health. Restored strength. That is not Adonai’s best. That is Adonai’s BASELINE. This is ground floor, entry position, health is yours, take this from me stuff.
Our spirits have been perfected and sealed. They will have it for as long as it takes to get from here to physically being before the Throne. When we have our new bodies, we won’t need it because there will be nothing that can take us away from Him. Until then, our spirits are sealed to save us from our own stupidity. Our own habit of going with the flow. Our own habit of participating in the sin that our bodies seek out of habit. We all do it (Romans 3:23-24). In a thought, a word, or an action. Everything that isn’t in faith is sin (Romans 14:23). But when we miss it, when we go with the wrong flow, we can repent. When we repent, He forgives (1 John 1:9-10). You know what doesn’t change? Our spirit. It is righteous and joyful before Adonai no matter WHAT we do.
That means that we can take from it ALL the time. We don’t HAVE to sin. We do, but we don’t HAVE to. We COULD choose not to. We can CHOOSE health. We can CHOOSE living a life of repentance, always in a state of being forgiven. Seeking HIM before all else (Matthew 6:33). All we need to do is REMEMBER. REMEMBER that He saved you. REMEMBER that He released healing through the cross. REMEMBER what Jesus has enabled us to engage through our spirit which is His. Jesus TOLD us to remember. “Then he took bread, and after giving thanks he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” And in the same way he took the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood” (Luke 22:19-20).
Remember what He has done. Remember that through His body and His blood He has saved your spirit, your soul, and your body. Remember that through His body and His blood, He has enabled you to engage PHYSICAL healing to match your SPIRITUAL healing. In your spirit, in your soul, and very definitely in your BODY. Take the health He has promised you. Take it. Trust Him. Engage it. Enjoy it. Abundantly.
Daily Affirmation Jesus IS Messiah: Psalm 69:20
“Their insults are painful and make me lose heart; I look for sympathy, but receive none, for comforters, but find none.” Messiah would be human. A man. He would have feelings. He would choose emotions. He would have the same fight as us all between what feelings our body experiences and what emotions we embrace. This verse prophetically looks forward to when Messiah would be sorrowful. Exceedingly sorrowful because while being totally righteous and full of love, was attacked and hated and insulted and rejected by those around Him. “Then he said to them, “My soul is deeply grieved, even to the point of death. Remain here and stay awake with me.”” (Matthew 26:38). Jesus was rejected and it nearly broke Him. He was sorrowful. So sorrowful He felt like death was at His throat. He was fighting that feeling with all that He had, holding to the spiritual joy of being the sacrifice (Hebrews 12:2). It was hard. One of the hardest things He had experienced up to that point. Jesus was rejected. Jesus was sorrowful about it. Jesus IS the Messiah!
