Dip the Toe: Psalm 122-128 “Approaching”

(All scripture from Lexham English Bible, Copyright 2012 Logos Bible Software)

All of today’s psalms were psalms of ascents. They were sung by people as they approached Jerusalem and walked up to the Temple. They were meant not only as praise, but as an opportunity for the worshipper to get their eyes pointed up toward God. To align themselves with His point of view. To prepare their hearts for meeting Him.

Psalm 122 is a celebration of joy in the ability to go to God’s House. To be in the place of PEACE with other believers, all seeking God and His presence.

Psalm 123 is a declaration of looking up to the Lord by choice. To keep eyes on Him. It is also a prayer for the Lord to help because as we look to Him we can start feeling unworthy or inferior – BUT, we are doing what we are created to do and He WILL show His love in and for us with comfort, removing that feeling with His LOVE (1 John 4:18).

Psalm 124 is praising the Lord for His defense of His people. Of how He moved to save them. How He rings them round in protection. It blesses the Lord for how He blesses His obedient children.

Psalm 125 is a celebration of how the Lord is the strength of His people (Nehemiah 8:10). Of how we can choose to participate in strength just by joyfully worshipping Him. Of how He does GOOD to those who seek Him.

Psalm 126 is thanking God for His salvation. For His restoration of His people. For the renewing of relationship with them. For the harvest we get from our seed of obedience. It is a prophetic praise for what Jesus did for us all.

Psalm 127 is an acknowledgement that the Lord needs to be in charge. That when we build on HIS foundation, we are secure. That if HE is not directing the project, it is doomed. Only the things of the Lord have any lasting value.

Psalm 128 is a celebration of the BLESSING of the Lord. Of all the things that bless us when we humbly submit to Him. Of the JOYS of an abundant life in Him.
